The Church and Peace movement was born in European dialogue on peace and war theology initiated in the post-WWII era by the newly-created World Council of Churches.

Following its founding as a network in 1978, Church and Peace has endeavoured to continue its mandate as a peace church voice in ecumenical dialogue through participation in events and networks such as the three European Ecumenical Assemblies, the Decade to Overcome Violence, the First European Peace Church Assembly, and the Assisi Coalition for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation.

Furthermore, Church and Peace is an associate member of the Conference of European Churches and a member of the International Coalition for the UN-Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence. It is also a member of regional umbrella groups such as the Network of Christian Peace Organisations (Britain and Ireland) and the Action Committee Service for Peace (Germany).
